The Invention of Lying
The film is set in an alternate reality in which no one has ever lied. Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is a lecture writer who is getting fired and nothing seems to go his way. He meets Anna (Jennifer Garner) who like everyone else, doesn't lie. When he needs to pay his rent, he goes to the bank and creates the world's first lie by withdrawing more than he has on his account. From there the story begins to unfold. The first 20 minutes of the film are laugh out loud funny but it never fully recovers after the first few scenes. A great attempt at a film that could have been ten times better given a better script and more time. I saw Ghost Town last year which didn't leave a lasting impression on me either but there is a story unlike most Hollywood movies. Stick to stand up Ricky! You do much better when telling jokes to a live audience. 2 and a half out of 4 stars.
